Devices and Video Formats Used on YouTube

Spoken Word and Vlogs

On any video platform, the two most fundamental formats are:

  1. Spoken Word:
  2. Vlogs

Both require appearing on camera to practice presence; they shouldn’t be overly specialized but rather companion-style or documentary-style. Essentially, one focuses on topics, the other on life recording. Vlogs were once very popular but are now considered outdated. However, for beginners, learning how to record is the first step. You should consider editing, scripts, and storyboarding after you have recorded some content.

Spoken word primarily covers trending hot topics and your own thoughts or viewpoints on matters. It is also a relatively relaxed shooting method; you can start with just a smartphone, especially for short videos.

Shooting Equipment

Initially, I only recommend using a smartphone.

I do not suggest using action cameras, GoPros, drones, 360-degree cameras, AI glasses, or other alternative methods unless you already have them. If you don’t have them yet, there is no need to rush into investing. Equipment can be an endless sinkhole; YouTube requires months, sometimes even years, with often pitiful earnings unless your data is exceptional. Otherwise, a daily-use smartphone is sufficient.

You should buy only some low-cost accessories like smartphone holders and mounts. It is recommended to prioritize 4K resolution, as it receives more recommendations and affects the reach pool (algorithmic distribution).

Tips

Many videos are filmed while walking or in a car. These locations can offer:

  1. Outdoors: Scenic backgrounds.
  2. Inside a Car: Non-distracting and relatively private.
  3. Room/Indoors: The quality is generally not as good as outdoors or in a car, but it is an option if you prefer staying home or are at a fixed location.

In summary: Smartphone + Spoken Word = Low Cost.

If you don’t know what to say or what to film, just record a vlog—merely keeping track of and sharing your life casually. Don’t worry about establishing camera presence and mastering shooting techniques until later.
